Savusavu

We have had s few charters over the last couple of weeks, a trip to Koro Island & fishing ones .
Shouldn't really call it fishing as there really wasn't any fish to be found.

We had to cancel the trip to Koro on Wednesday as it was far too rough to do the trip, we did manage to go across on Thursday.

There was some big waves going across, taking us a extra half hour to get there, but a nice ride home.

Thank you Eric & Melissa for bringing us those lovely lures, only wish we could have caught you something on them. We will keep in touch & let you know what the lure catch.

The day we took Nicola & Alice out was just the same, no sigh of bird life or fish on either sea mount, thankfully we caught 3 small bonito which we released & just as we were on our way home, finally a nice Trevally, so now at least they have something for dinner.

Have a safe trip back to Italy.

Savusavu Sunrise

Well after nearly 2 months with boat hiccups, we managed to go out on a fishing charter.

As we left the Copra Shed Marina a little after 6am the sun was beginning to rise, at the entrance to Savusavu Harbour the sun had just started to appear over the hill at the back of Cousteau Resort..

The Roll on Roll Off Ferry was also just approaching the entrance, with a load of cargo & passengers from the Main Island.

It looked like it was going to be a good day on the water, as we approached the sea mount we saw 4 local commercial fishing boats, all fishing on the mount with baits dropped all over the mount.

We fished up & down & around the mount but nothing was happening, there were schools of bait fish but nothing big was coming up, tried fishing along the reef but this also wasn't producing anything.

Making our way away from the mount we did managed to pick up a couple of yellowfin but they were so small we threw them back.

Finally a nice size barracuda, this was taken back to the Resort & cooked for the guest at dinner, "it was amazing" was the remark from the guest.

All up we didn't catch fish but it was a truly beautiful day on the water & we did see pods of whales through the day.

Koro Island Trip

Finally the right parts arrived, so it took Terry a few days to assemble, then it was back into the water for Searov.

This has been a very long month waiting for parts, then waiting again for the right parts to be sent, but now things seem to be working, so back to business.

The first trip was to take Vodafone over to Koro to service their towers, the trip across was a bit bumpy, & I think not being on the sea for 6 weeks made it feel a little more rough?

Anyway the trip back home, was a lot better as always as we are traveling  in the same direction of the waves.

Unfortunately there wasn't any bird life to be seen on the way back so didn't do any fishing.

Were to have a couple of charters at the week end but the forcast was for 20-25knts so decided it wasn't any use to try & go out.

Weather is changing for the better now so maybe we will manage to get out soon.

Development on Nawai Island

Weather in Savusavu has been really lovely, finally getting some cooler mornings.

Building has commenced on Nawai Island, the first building is visible & soon the thatched roof will be finished.

We have had to pull Searov out as we have a leak in the tilt ram, awaiting a new one to arrive from New Zealand.

Postal service is fairly slow so it will be at least a couple of weeks before we are operational again.

At least there is now a trailer we can hire to put her on to pull her out, something Savusavu hasn't had before.

Savusavu

Had a nice break away, but it is always nice to arrive back into Savusavu, although I thought I would be stuck in Nadi as there was a threat of a cyclone approaching Fiji.

Thankfully I did arrive back on the booked flight &the cyclone developed as it left Fiji waters

We did manage to get out last week for a fish with a young couple from Canada,
The morning was lovely when we left the dock, a little later then planed (taxi didn't turn up).

On getting to the sea mount there wasn' t any sign of birds working or sign of fish around, we did the usual run up & down & around the mount, but nothing was happening.

We did a stint along the reef but again nothing happened, so made our way back to the mount. Just as we thought we would have a drink, one reel went off peeling yards of line.

All of a sudden the boat came alive, bringing in spare lines while the husband sat in the game chair & Terry hands him the rod.

The Marlin now jumps out of the water & we all get a good look at it, again the line reels out as it does another run in the other direction, now it  is time to wind the line in. Sadly the line now goes slack, it has snapped, Marlin has gone with a new lure.

At least it is there for hopefully us to have a try at playing it again another day, we finally caught a couple tuna on the way home.

The best sight of the day was seeing pods of whales on the way home, some  only about 5 meters from the boat, I think the lack of fish was made up by seeing these wonderful creatures.

Sunset in Savusavu

We had some wild weather go through last Thursday, fortunately nothing major happened.

The waves were breaking over the seawall & one inflatable ended up on the road near the MH supermarket.

On Friday morning it was such a lovely morning you wouldn't believe we had all that wind & rain the night before.

Had Searov up doing the anti fouling over the week end as the King tides were here again, it was such a beautiful sunset, while we waited for the high tide to come back in so we could re float her.

On the last fishing charter  the day before the wind & rain came, we did manage to catch a couple of yellowfin tuna & barracuda, we  saw some bigger yellowfin but they were doing the trick of avoiding the lures again.

Mahimahi

Weather here in Savusavu has been extremely hot over the last week or so, thankfully we got some heavy rain yesterday to cool things down & fill the water tanks.

Fishing hasn't been the best, guess it is too hot even for the fish.

Had a trip across to Koro Island on Thursday to pick up guests, on the way over & back there wasn't a bird to be seen, this is very unusual, we usually see something working out there.

Have had a couple of fishing charters, saw big Yellowfin but only the smaller ones were taking the lure, did manage to get a couple of very nice Mahimahi though.

Time to antifoul Searov again there are very high tides start on Friday so weather permitting Terry will be busy scraping all the oyster shells off the hull & changing stern drive oil.

We don't have anywhere to pull her out so have to beach her to do all the work so it takes 2 days, one day for each side.
