Savusavu Morning

In the early mornings it is cool, with beautiful calm seas, then by 8.00 the sun gets up & it is so hot, you can't get much done.
Usually by lunch time we get a heavy tropical rain downpour, that clears the air, & it is cool enough to carry on with jobs that have to be done.
There aren't very many tourist around so business is very slack, a couple of Resorts have closed down for a month to do maintenance, in this slow season.
We went out on Sunday to give the boat a run, it was another beautiful day on the water, at first we saw a few good work ups, then as it got hotter, all the fish were gone, so we came back home about 9.00.
We caught a couple of nice Yellowfin, & a good number of Skippys.

Flying Back To Savusavu

The flight from Nadi International Airport to Savusavu usually takes an 1hr.

Once we leave the airport, the plane usually flies for about 5 mins over the ocean.

Then turns towards the mountains, & crosses the ranges, before once again flying over the ocean towards Vanua Levu, where Savusavu is suitated.

The day I travelled, the rivers looked brown, but the vegetation was very green, as a lot of rain had fallen the night before.

It is a very scenic trip, & is wonderful to see all the coral atolls, & beautiful water colours, as we fly over.

Back In Savusavu

16th Febuary

At last, I am back safely in Savusavu, it is so good to be back in our little paradise.
I think when you live here, it is good to leave at least once a year, so as to appreciate what we have.

Nothing much has changed except with all the rain, the plants in my garden are overgrown, & there seem to be a lot of weeds, so guess it will be gardening for me for the next few weeks, to put the garden back in order.

The news on the fishing front while I was away was good, a couple of Marlin were hooked but unfortunately got off. Some nice size Mahimahi and Yellowfin Tuna were caught.

I was told a couple of friends hooked & brought in a lovely Yellowfin tuna, weighing in round about 65kg. Do hope they are able to give me a photo of the fish.

The seas are so calm again & days are hot, so guess we will have to wait a while before we can go fishing. Can't wait.

Visiting NZ & Australia

15th February
Well it was quiet a break for me, visiting New Zealand & Australia.
Last week 2 cruise boats visited Savusavu.

While in Auckland I visited the wharf area where one of the cruise ships was docked, what a difference to actually see one of those ships that visit our little town, close up, it was huge, no wonder they can't dock at our wharf in Savusavu.

It was a very long flight home to Savusavu from Perth, with a stop over in Sydney, there were so many planes leaving at the same time, it took us 30mins to get to the runway & take off.

This made our arrival into Nadi 45mins late, so missed the connecting flight to Savusavu, still after 9hrs flying & 3hrs stop over, I was ready to put my head down.

Savusavu From the Sea

These pictures were taken on one of our Bay Cruises, it gives one a different view of the town.

Some Ladies fishing in waist high water up Nakama creek.

I am away from Savusavu at the moment so these phopos are from my file

From reports I had from Savusavu, I think we were lucky to escape the flooding that the western side experienced.

There are so many people without any basic items for daily living, it is so sad.

Calm Savusavu Morning

10th January
Terry & I went out for a quick fish on Monday, to see what was out there & give the boat a run.
As we got to the fishing spot, a big workup was happening, as we got closer the fish began to go down, we had one strike as we went through, but it didn't hook up.
A little later another hit, this time it stayed on, it put up a good fight, & soon it was in the boat, 12kg Mahimahi.
Again a work up appeared ahead, as we got closer, big yellowfin tuna were spotted jumping right out of the water.
This is such a beautiful sight to see, these big fish throwing themselves right out of the water, some so close to the boat, you could just about touch them.
The big fish just wouldn't take anything Terry put out, & he tried so many different lures, it wasn't funny.
We eventually caught a yellowfin tuna, but it was one of the smaller ones that were around. When Terry guttered it, it was full of tiny bait fish, so no wonder the big ones wouldn't take anything we put out.

New Year 2009

Like the rest of the Fiji group Savusavu is experiencing really beautiful weather at the moment, it could be a little hot for some people, but the seas are so calm, & clear.
We had a trip to Namena Island on Tuesday, to drop off some Luggage to the live aboard Fiji Aggressor, anchored off the Island, doing dives.
The plane bringing in the bags, was delayed for 2 1/2 hrs so we didn't get away until 10.30, the trip was a good one, so on the way home, we decided to put out a couple of lines.
We trawled for a couple of hours, but there wasn't any sigh of bird life, or of fish working, so pulled in the gear & headed for home.
A few fishing boat are saying the same thing, there just isn't any fish around.
It could be the hot calm weather we are having, that is having a effect on the way fish are feeding.
A couple of photos taken from the Copra Shed Marine.
We wish you all the best for 2009.
